The Sea Turtles and Snowy Plovers Are Headed to Gulf Shores!

Sanibel’s beloved sea turtles are returning to nest on our city’s shores – a yearly journey their ancestors started more than 100 million years ago. Snowy plovers are coming back too.

Together, we can renew our annual commitment to these wonderful creatures by taking a few steps to ensure they’re protected on our beach:

Keep the beach extra clean by picking up any trash or debris you see.

Carry on, carry off by remembering to take your beach chairs, shoes, toys, etc. when you leave the shore.

Fill in holes because sea turtles can become trapped inside.

Leash your dogs at all times while on the beach.

Watch your step because snowy plovers are tiny and can be overlooked while you’re walking.

No white lights on at night either from your home or while on the beach. Sea turtles will get disoriented and move toward your lights, not the moonlight they should follow to reach the water.

· Go red: Cover your flashlights at night with red film if you’re on the beach.

· Go Yellow: If you live beachside: Please turn off outdoor lights or use yellow bulbs at night. Close blinds or curtains to block indoor lights.
